Who Benefits From Drug Rehab for Alcohol Addiction?

People who exhibit signs and symptoms of alcohol use disorder may benefit from alcohol substance abuse programs at an alcohol drug rehab center. Understanding the signs and symptoms associated with alcohol use disorder can help you identify alcohol addiction in yourself or a loved one.

Signs & Symptoms

Everyone has a different experience with addiction. With that being said, common signs of alcohol addiction include but aren’t limited to the following.

  • Increased tolerance to alcohol (needing higher amounts of alcohol than before to achieve the desired effects)
  • Continuing to drink even when it causes problems in your life, responsibilities, or relationships
  • Experiencing short-term memory loss or blackouts as a result of drinking
  • Drinking in secret, often so that others don’t know how much you’re actually drinking
  • Choosing to drink alcohol instead of engaging in important responsibilities or hobbies
  • Feeling distressed when you are unable to access alcohol
  • Becoming distant from loved ones due to drinking
  • Risky behavior, such as driving while intoxicated
  • Trouble sticking to attempts to stop drinking
  • Cravings
  • Denial

Even if you don’t consider yourself to have an alcohol use disorder, these signs may indicate a need for support. Some individuals consider themselves high-functioning despite alcohol addiction, and while it may make the condition easier to hide, this does not protect them from the effects of addiction.

Symptoms

In addition to the signs of alcohol addiction listed above, there are common symptoms people experience as a result of excessive alcohol intake. Symptoms of alcohol addiction can include but aren’t limited to the following.

  • Slurred speech
  • Poor coordination
  • Slowed reaction times
  • Changes in appearance
  • Irritability or anger
  • Mood swings

Many people with alcohol addiction experience physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms when they attempt to stop drinking. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms can include but aren’t limited to an uptick in anxiety, tremors, rapid heartbeat, shaking, nausea, vomiting, and seizures.

The likelihood of serious adverse events, like coma or death, increases when alcohol is consumed alongside other drugs.

Effective Alcohol Substance Abuse Programs

Programs at an alcohol addiction treatment center will usually include multiple therapies. For example, cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and other techniques might be used in one-on-one or group therapy settings. For some, medications used to treat alcohol use disorder can be helpful. At an alcohol addiction treatment center, you may see a psychiatrist or another prescriber on-site if you require medication for alcohol use disorder or other medications. With that in mind, here are the levels of care and evidence-based programs generally used in alcohol addiction treatment.

Detoxification

Medical detoxification programs provide clients the opportunity to detox from substances like alcohol safely and in a supportive medical environment. Discontinuing the use of alcohol and other drugs can be challenging for multiple reasons, such as withdrawal symptoms. Detoxification (detox) programs are designed to help you through that process. Some people attend detox prior to residential inpatient or another program at an alcohol addiction treatment center, though not all.

Residential inpatient

Residential inpatient treatment can be ideal for those overcoming the addiction because it provides 24/7 supervision and support. When a client attends residential treatment for alcohol addiction, they eat, sleep, and live at the treatment facility for the duration of their care. It allows you to focus on your recovery in a supportive environment, attend multiple therapies (often individual, group, and family therapy), engage in reaction activities, and get intensive care from a complete range of treatment staff. Many people step down to outpatient care after residential inpatient to help them transition into life outside of a treatment center, though not all.

Outpatient

Outpatient treatment allows clients to sleep at home or otherwise outside of their treatment facility while getting care throughout the week. Like inpatient or partial hospitalization programs, individuals in an outpatient alcohol substance abuse program will typically work with a range of different treatment professionals and will follow a schedule of activities like group and individual therapy. The time commitment for outpatient treatment is often less than twenty hours per week, not including transit time to your facility.

Partial hospitalization

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) are ideal for clients who desire a level of care higher than outpatient but lower than residential inpatient. They do not require sleeping or living on-site at your treatment facility. Usually, PHP at an alcohol addiction treatment center requires a time commitment of around twenty or more hours per week, not including transit time to your facility.

Dual diagnosis

There’s a large crossover between alcohol addiction and other mental health conditions. Some people cite self-medicating as the reason for their addiction. The term “dual diagnosis” is used to describe the presence of a substance use disorder and at least one other mental health diagnosis. Dual diagnosis treatment addresses both substance abuse and other mental health concerns, leading to more tremendous success for many clients. Dual diagnosis treatment can occur in a residential inpatient, PHP, or outpatient setting.
