Inpatient Rehab

What is an Inpatient Drug Rehab?

Substance use disorders are recognized as a progressive condition which means that you will continue to experience worsening mental health, physical health, and behavioral consequences while you drink and use drugs. The consequences that you experience as a result of your addiction will differ from what others experience. There are a variety of individual differences that play a role in this, including your environment, support system, and the severity of your addiction.

Inpatient drug rehabs near you can provide you with intensive treatment that can make a lasting difference in your recovery. Inpatient rehab programs require that you reside at the treatment facility while you are participating in their program. By doing this, you are in a safe and substance-free environment. Some treatment providers may incorporate sober outings or community peer-led groups into their programs. Additionally, you will have access to addiction professionals around the clock to help you with the expected and unexpected challenges that you experience.

Inpatient addiction treatment will focus on stabilizing your medical health before beginning the work on your other concerns. This occurs in a detoxification program. Some treatment providers do not offer detox, which would require that you complete a detox program in a different facility, such as a hospital, before beginning your inpatient rehab program.

After knowing that you are medically stable and through the discomforts associated with withdrawal, you can be the work associated with inpatient rehab programs. While this, too, will look different for each individual, it will include a combination of learning about addiction and personal work.

The length of time that you in a residential rehab center will be dependent on your unique needs. This will include the severity of your addiction, the presence of mental health concerns, the presence of medical health concerns, and the consequences you have experienced from your use. With that being said, the length associated with residential rehab programs ranges from 30-90 days.

How Prevalent is Inpatient Addiction Treatment?

The 2020 results from the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services showed that residential inpatient treatment was the third most common form of addiction treatment program used in 2020. Outpatient addiction treatment programs and opioid treatment programs outranked residential treatment programs. Hospital-based inpatient programs were used less frequently than residential treatment options.

Approximately 31% of individuals who received addiction treatment in 2020 were treated for an alcohol and drug substance use disorder. An estimated 52% of individuals who received care were treated for only drug abuse, while an estimated 13% were treated for alcohol use disorder. Just under half (49%) of individuals who received addiction treatment in 2020 were treated for a dual diagnosis.

Additionally, the N-SSATS reported that 8-12% of individuals surveyed under the age of 18 were enrolled in a residential treatment program, which was a decrease from previous years.
