Different Types of Addiction Treatment

The National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services in 2020 showed us that the year 2020 had the lowest participation in drug rehabs since before 2011. This report showed that the most commonly used Florida Drug Rehabs were outpatient treatment facilities followed by residential treatment and hospital-based inpatient programs.

When exploring drug and alcohol rehabs in Florida, you’ll encounter various program types, each with unique criteria and advantages. Inpatient and outpatient programs represent the primary categories. Inpatient rehabs require residing within the treatment facility during the program, while outpatient options offer more flexibility.

Detoxification

Detoxification is a form of inpatient treatment that many individuals need. Anyone who has been misusing or abusing drugs or alcohol is at risk of experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Depending on the characteristics of your use, including what, how much, and for how long, your withdrawal symptoms will likely be uncomfortable. For some, this can be a dangerous process that comes with significant health risks such as dehydration, seizures, and death. The main focus of detox programs is to provide you with the medical support and supervision needed while your body adjusts to the natural changes that occur when you stop abusing drugs and alcohol.

The length of time that you are in detoxification will depend on the severity of your use and your symptoms. Typically, detox programs last from four to nine days.

Residential Inpatient Treatment

Residential inpatient drug and alcohol rehabs in Florida may offer a detoxification program or may require that you complete a medical detox at another treatment facility. Residential drug rehabs typically provide you with a structured routine that entails group therapy, individual therapy, and educational sessions. Depending on your needs, you may have access to dual-diagnosis treatment and medication-assisted treatment. This would be an ideal program for someone who is unable to stop their use, and who is considered in a crisis situation.

Residential inpatient drug rehabs in Florida work to help you develop a foundation of sobriety and knowledge before you leave their program. This includes focusing on relapse prevention, your mental health, your physical health, and other areas of your life that have been impacted by your addiction. Towards the end of your treatment, your Counselors should talk to you about your continued care options, and what they feel you would benefit from. Your plan will likely be different from your peers because you have had experiences unique to you that have shaped your recovery.

Your time in residential drug rehab will vary based on the severity of your addiction and your other treatment needs. As an example, if you are in need of dual-diagnosis treatment, you may be in treatment longer than someone who does not require that additional support. Inpatient rehab programs can range from 4 to 12 weeks, depending on your treatment needs and goals.

Partial Hospitalization Programming

Partial Hospitalization Programming is offered in outpatient drug rehabs. Also known as PHP, this program provides you with a full day of addiction treatment, similar to what you would experience in an inpatient drug and alcohol rehab program. Individuals who are not ready for other outpatient treatment programs, and those who are unable to attend an inpatient program can benefit from a PHP. While you may be eligible for a PHP with a severe substance use disorder, you will need to have a safe and sober home environment.

Similar to inpatient drug and alcohol rehabs in Florida, PHP includes group therapy, individual therapy, and educational sessions. If needed, you will have access to dual-diagnosis treatment and medication-assisted treatment.

PHP programs can last from two to four weeks, depending on your treatment needs.

Intensive Outpatient Programming

Intensive outpatient programming, also known as IOP, is another form of outpatient addiction treatment. IOP is referred to as intensive because of the amount of time you spend in treatment each week. IOP consists of multiple group sessions and one individual session each week. Group sessions typically last 3 hours, and you can be expected to participate in 3-5 group sessions each week.

IOP programs can be a great way for individuals who completed an inpatient program to transition into outpatient programming. Additionally, it can be a great option for individuals who do not meet the criteria for inpatient rehab, and who cannot accommodate a PHP into their routine. IOP programs often run in the mornings and evenings to accommodate your other responsibilities.

IOP groups will focus on skills that will support you in your recovery, identifying and coping with triggers, and beginning to address the areas of your life that were impacted by your addiction. You can expect to participate in an IOP for one to three months, depending on your unique needs.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient drug rehabs in Florida can provide you with recovery groups, individual sessions, educational sessions, dual-diagnosis treatment, and medication-assisted treatment. Outpatient treatment options are not as intensive as PHP and IOP, which means that they are designed for individuals who need moderate to minimum support. Recovery groups can last from an hour to an hour and a half and can range from once to three times a week. Your treatment schedule will likely be modified to reflect your progress in your recovery.

Outpatient Florida drug rehabs can focus on a variety of topics relevant to your recovery, including relapse prevention skills, emotion regulation skills, mindfulness, self-care, and provide you with social support.

Your time in an outpatient treatment program will depend on your unique needs, including the forms of treatment you are in and your needs. You can expect to participate in outpatient treatment for up to one year or more if needed.

Sober Living

While sober living is not considered formal addiction treatment, it is a feature of many drug rehabs in Florida. The need for sober living became apparent in the 1970s when it became apparent that an individual’s home environment has a direct impact on their recovery. This is an excellent option for individuals who do not have a home and those whose home environment puts their recovery at risk.

Sober living homes provide you with a safe and drug-free environment to live in while you are getting treatment. If you choose to stay at a sober living home offered by a drug rehab, there will likely be an expectation regarding your participation in the rehab program. Sober homes tend to have a zero-tolerance policy regarding drug and alcohol use to protect the other residents.
