Understanding Depression: Types, Signs, and Symptoms
There are multiple depressive disorders or types of depression. Most frequently, you will hear about major depressive disorder (MDD), persistent depressive disorder (PDD), postpartum depression (PD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Each of these disorders has different diagnostic criteria, but many of the symptoms a person will experience during a depressive episode are the same.
Knowing the signs and symptoms associated with depression can help you recognize it in yourself or a loved one. Common signs and symptoms of depression include but aren’t limited to the following:
- Feelings of emptiness or a persistently sad, down, or depressed mood.
- Lack of interest in activities one would usually find pleasurable.
- Unexplained GI distress, body aches, or headaches.
- Slowed psychomotor activity (body movements).
- Social isolation or withdrawal from others.
- Feeling guilty, helpless, or worthless.
- Trouble concentrating or focusing.
- Sleeping too much or too little.
- Changes in appetite or weight.
- Anxiety or restlessness.
- Irritability or anger.
- Fatigue.
We work with most major insurance carriers.
Centric Behavioral Health facilities work with most major health insurance carriers in order to provide effective, accessible treatment options for substance abuse and mental health.
How Does Depression Relate to Substance Abuse?
Many individuals with substance use disorder also experience mental illness, commonly referred to as ‘dual diagnosis’. While depression is one of the most prevalent mental health conditions, it’s even more likely that you will develop depression if you also have a substance use disorder or vice versa. Sometimes, people with a depressive disorder will develop a substance use disorder partially as a way to cope with symptoms. However, substance abuse can also worsen depression. Often, it becomes a vicious cycle, but it’s one that’s possible to break. That’s why we have dual diagnosis care available to help clients find comprehensive coping skills and relief.
Causes of Depression
There’s no singular cause of depression. Instead, various factors can increase the risk that someone will develop a depressive disorder. Potential risk factors for depression include but aren’t limited to the following:
- Family history. If an immediate blood relative lives with depression, it is more likely that you’ll experience it yourself.
- Personal history of another condition. Living with other physical and mental health conditions increases the chances that you will develop depression.
- Trauma and adverse life experiences. Traumatic events and adverse experiences are associated with a higher risk of depressive disorders.
- Poverty and marginalization. Low socioeconomic status and marginalization can be traumatic in and of themselves and are associated with an elevated risk of depression and other mental disorders.

Best Treatments for Depression as a Dual Diagnosis Disorder
Getting depression treatment at Centric Behavioral Health means that you’ll have access to evidence-based treatments, luxury amenities, informed staff members, and a full continuum of care. The best treatments for depression as a dual-diagnosis disorder can include any of the following levels of care. Our admissions staff can help you decide which level or levels of care are right for you.
Discontinuing the use of substances can be uncomfortable and even dangerous at times. Also called “detox,” detoxification programs help you get off of drugs and alcohol in a supervised medical environment, reduce discomfort, and stay safe. is a short-term process that’s often a precursor to another program or mode of support.
Inpatient
Inpatient programs are the highest levels of care used in addiction treatment centers. Getting inpatient depression treatment at Centric Behavioral Health means that you will stay at our luxury facilities for the duration of your program. This can be beneficial because it means that you will live in a space free of substances while engaging in regular groups, individual therapy, recreation, and other activities during the day that help you build skills and prepare for life post-treatment.
Partial hospitalization
Partial hospitalization programs are one step below inpatient care in intensity. They offer the highest level of support you can get without being in inpatient treatment. Even though you’ll live off-campus while in a partial hospitalization program (PHP), you’ll engage in treatment on-campus for 6-8 hours per day, five days a week. Treatment activities are similar to those seen in inpatient care, including group and individual therapy.
Intensive outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs at Centric Behavioral Health require a lower time commitment per week and are less intensive than PHP. They involve 12-15 hours of groups and one individual therapy per week. Attending an intensive outpatient program (IOP) is ideal for those who need increased flexibility while in treatment or for those who are stepping down from a higher level of care.
Outpatient
Centric Behavioral Health provides other outpatient services in addition to IOP. Outpatient recovery groups such as 12-step or alumni groups, continued therapy, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) can all be parts of your outpatient recovery journey.
Aftercare planning
Individuals in any of our treatment programs or levels of care benefit from and engage in what is called aftercare planning. Our staff members will help you make a personalized aftercare plan for continued recovery and support after treatment. What aftercare looks like will depend on the person but may include support groups, continued therapy, housing arrangements, and more.
Supportive housing
Centric Behavioral Health offers supportive housing or sober living options. People who benefit from supportive housing often include those receiving partial hospitalization or outpatient depression treatment at our facilities and those who are in need of a substance-free living environment but are not involved in a treatment program.
