What Makes An Effective Treatment Program?

Whether someone is looking for drug rehab in Vermont or another location, there are certain things that a program should have.

First, it should be evidence-based. We know so much now about the science of addiction and how it affects the brain and behavior. Because of extensive research, we also understand how to best approach addiction treatment. Addiction is a complex disease affecting the brain and also a person’s mental and physical health.

Other considerations taken into account during an addiction treatment program, whether it’s substance abuse treatment in Vermont or elsewhere in the country, are individual needs. There’s not one specific treatment plan or approach that works for every person. Just as is the case with medical care, everyone’s rehab needs are different, and an effective treatment plan for drug or alcohol addiction needs to consider this.

An individualized treatment plan will speak to not only the addiction treatment needs of a client but also their holistic needs in other areas.

Other elements of effective treatment include:

  • Programs need to be easily accessible and available. When someone is reluctant to enter a treatment program, services need to be available immediately.
  • It’s important when seeking addiction treatment to stay in a program for a long enough period of time.
  • Behavioral therapies, like cognitive behavioral therapy, are often the focus of treatment. Behavioral therapies can help a client develop a motivation to change. Behavioral therapies are a good way to develop skills for problem-solving, rebuild or strengthen relationships, and learn healthy coping mechanisms that can be used to replace substance use.
  • Some treatment plans will integrate medication-assisted treatment or MAT. MAT uses Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medicines that can help with withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Primarily, MAT is for opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder.
  • Individualized treatment plans should evolve and be updated as the needs of the client change over time.

Centric Behavioral Health builds our addiction treatment programs on all these effective treatment principles. Our expert team of addiction treatment professionals relies on evidence-based approaches in creating personalized treatment programs.

Treating Addiction As a Disease

When someone has an addiction, it’s a brain disease. We have learned more through comprehensive research in recent decades about how addiction occurs and why some people develop substance use disorders while others don’t.

When someone first uses a substance, such as opioids, stimulants like cocaine or amphetamine, or drinks alcohol, it can create a euphoric response in their brain. This response can then trigger the brain’s reward system. The reward system is responsible for compelling us to continue seeking pleasurable things.

Unfortunately, for some people, substances can hijack this part of the brain, and their substance use is no longer in their control. A person with a substance use disorder might experience compulsive cravings for a substance. They might want to cut back or stop using it, but a defining symptom of addiction is being unable to without professional treatment.

Addiction is also considered a chronic disease; being in remission is when you recover. With individualized and evidence-driven treatment, clients can and do recover and live fulfilling lives without substances, but it requires work. You actively maintain recovery throughout your life, with an addiction treatment program serving as a foundation for this.

Centric Behavioral Health supports long-term recovery with research-backed treatment approaches coupled with compassion and understanding.

Levels of Addiction Treatment

Programs with a continuum of care have unique advantages for someone looking for addiction treatment in Vermont or elsewhere. A continuum of care means that rather than participating in one type of treatment program and then it ends, you move through gradual steps in your treatment journey. Each level of care becomes less intensive, but only as you’re ready.

Levels of treatment can include:

  • Medical detox, where clients receive around-the-clock medical care and supervision as they go through withdrawal. When medically appropriate, medical detox can include medications to reduce drug or alcohol cravings and lessen withdrawal symptoms.
  • Inpatient rehab is the highest level of care. Clients live onsite for a period of time and participate in different therapies and holistic treatments throughout their time. Clients can focus exclusively on their recovery in inpatient rehab, and they’re supported by an expert staff and other people who are receiving treatment.
  • Partial hospitalization programs at Centric Behavioral Health are outpatient but are very similar in terms of the time commitment and structure to inpatient rehab. It’s still an intensive level of treatment, and most clients participate in the treatment daily for six to eight hours, five days a week.
  • Intensive outpatient programs can be a step down from partial hospitalization, but therapies are still somewhat intensive.
  • Traditional outpatient programs offer a high degree of flexibility, and clients can live and work usually while continuing to check in with their treatment team. Outpatient rehab allows clients to implement those coping strategies and healthy habits they learned earlier in treatment.
  • Aftercare can include living in a sober living house, referrals to local therapists and care providers, or recommendations for participation in support groups, like a 12-step program.

Centric Behavioral Health offers all levels of care along the continuum throughout the country.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment in Vermont

Research has found that at least half the people with an addiction also have a co-occurring mental health disorder. Mental health disorders can include depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, among others.

When someone has a mental health disorder, it has to be treated and well-managed to improve the likelihood of a successful recovery. Untreated mental health disorders significantly increase the risk of relapse, even after treatment.

With that in mind, when searching for a Vermont drug and alcohol rehab center, or a facility in any location, dual diagnosis treatment is important.

Centric Behavioral Health offers dual diagnosis treatment for mental health conditions and addiction in a supportive, safe environment.
