Substance Abuse and Treatment Needs in the LGBTQ+ Community
Extensive research tells us that the LGBTQ+ community is at a substantially higher risk of substance use disorders.
Statistics indicate that approximately 21.8% of adults identifying as lesbian, gay, or bisexual had experienced an alcohol use disorder in the past year in 2020, whereas this was only the case for 11% of the general population. Similarly, around 6.7% of lesbian, gay, or bisexual adults had misused Opioids in the past year, but the same was true for only about 3.6% of the general population.
In addition to higher rates of substance abuse, the LGBTQ+ community faces an increased likelihood of many other mental health conditions. Accordingly, individuals should be screened for other mental disorders, such as depression and PTSD, to ensure the best treatment outcomes. Centric Behavioral Health provides dual-diagnosis treatment programs for clients with a substance use disorder and at least one other mental health concern.

How Different Levels of Care Support the Recovery Process in LGBTQIA+ Individuals
While LGBTQ+ identifying people are more likely to experience substance use disorders, it is also true that treatment centers offering affirming treatment are associated with better outcomes. That is part of what makes our LGBTQ+ addiction treatment special. It’s crucial to have the chance to let your guard down and put in the work in treatment as your authentic self. Our treatment program offerings include the levels of care listed below. Some of our clients attend just one level of care, whereas others engage in a combination at different points in time. If you’re not sure which level of care you should start with, our admissions team will help you decide. This will inform which of our treatment centers you attend.
Finding Addiction Treatment for Women
There are barriers to treatment for women that men don’t experience, or at least not as significantly.
One is the worry about leaving behind family. Women are often primary caretakers for their children and family, so they worry about being able to leave for rehab. Another barrier to getting treatment for women is that they worry about how people will perceive them and how it will affect things like child custody.
Women tend to progress more quickly to full-blown addiction than men after using a substance, and their withdrawal symptoms may be more intense.
Addiction treatment for women needs to include all of these considerations. Treatment programs should integrate parenting classes, job training, and other programs specific to the needs of women.
Women also respond more to supportive therapy than other approaches.
