According to research, the substance use rates among athlete populations include:
- Based on self-reporting, among college athletes, 75-93 percent of male athletes said they used alcohol over the past year, and 71-93 percent of females said the same.
- Twenty-eight percent of college athletes said they’d used cannabis in the past year.
- Among professional football players, 52 percent said they’d used opioids at some point.
- Nine percent of professional football players said they’d used anabolic steroids in the past year, while 67% of competitive powerlifters said the same.
Athlete drug and alcohol rehab programs, such as what’s available at Centric Behavioral Health, can treat addiction and the underlying causes contributing to the initial use.
