Who Benefits From Drug Rehab for Heroin Addiction?

People who have an addiction to Heroin can benefit from various treatment options or levels of care. Understanding the signs and symptoms associated with Heroin use can help you gain awareness of the effects of heroin addiction and how it might present in yourself or someone you know.

Signs

People with heroin addiction may use the drug differently, which may determine certain signs, such as whether or not someone has markings on the skin ("track marks") frequently associated with Heroin use. One may inject, smoke, or snort the drug. With that in mind, here are some common signs of heroin addiction.

  • Neglecting one's responsibilities at work, school, home, or other areas of life
  • Loss of interest in activities one previously enjoyed due to heroin use or time spent using Heroin
  • Spending a great deal of time thinking about, using, or experiencing the effects of Heroin
  • Keeping drug paraphernalia around one's home (e.g., syringes, burned spoons)
  • Problems in interpersonal relationships due to heroin use
  • Changes in appearance (may appear lethargic or stoned)
  • Wearing long sleeves (if Heroin is used intravenously)
  • Legal problems that result from heroin use
  • Sudden changes in who one hangs out with
  • Withdrawal from loved ones
  • An uptick in secretive behaviors
  • Needing money often
  • Nose bleeds
  • Picking skin

Changes in personal hygiene are also common among those who use the drug.

Symptoms

In addition to the signs listed above, you may notice the following symptoms in yourself or a loved one with Heroin addiction.

  • Itching
  • Dry mouth
  • Agitation, irritability, or hostility toward others
  • Changes in sleep or sleeping more
  • Poor judgment or decision making
  • Trouble concentrating or focusing
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Personality changes
  • Impaired coordination
  • Slurred speech
  • Nodding off
  • Mood swings
  • Euphoria
  • Depression

The long-term effects of heroin use are serious and must be considered. Using Heroin alongside other drugs, including alcohol, may increase the risk of serious adverse events.

Long-Term Effects of Heroin Use

Potential long-term effects of heroin use include but aren’t limited to the following.

  • Organ damage
  • Infections
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Cardiovascular complications
  • Respiratory problems
  • Overdose or death
  • Loss of housing
  • Job loss

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), rates of heroin overdose have increased in recent years. A heroin overdose can result in death, coma, or other severe consequences.

Causes of Heroin Addiction

While there’s no singular cause of Heroin addiction, some risk factors make it more likely. Here are some potential risk factors for Heroin addiction.

  • Family history. A history of substance use disorders among immediate family members increases the likelihood that an individual will have one themselves.
  • Environmental and social factors. Environmental and social factors such as being around people who use Heroin or access to Heroin can increase the likelihood that one will use it themselves and develop an addiction.
  • Personal history of mental health disorders. Individuals with a history of other mental health conditions may be more likely to develop a substance use disorder.

Socioeconomic status, trauma, and personality traits can also impact the likelihood of developing an addiction to Heroin. Regardless of the cause, recovery is possible, and finding a heroin addiction treatment center can help.

Heroin Substance Abuse Program Types

Many facilities that treat substance use disorders, including Centric Behavioral Health, offer a range of different treatment options. Those who contact a heroin addiction treatment center may pursue one or more of the following.

Residential inpatient

Residential inpatient treatment can be ideal for those facing substance abuse because it provides 24/7 supervision and support. When a client attends residential treatment at a Heroin drug rehab center, they live at the facility for the duration of their care. Residential inpatient allows you to focus on your recovery in a supportive environment, attend multiple therapies (often, individual, group, and family therapy), engage in reaction activities, and receive other types of care and support from treatment staff.

Outpatient

The main difference between residential inpatient and outpatient treatment is that clients live outside of their treatment facility when receiving outpatient care. In outpatient treatment for Heroin addiction, clients often engage in groups, individual therapy, and work with a team of professionals for twenty hours per week or less. Many people step down to outpatient care after residential inpatient to help them transition into life outside of a treatment center, though some people choose to start with outpatient care.

Partial hospitalization

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) for Heroin addiction and other concerns are similar to other outpatient programs. However, PHP provides a higher level of support than standard outpatient care and usually requires a time commitment of around twenty hours or more per week.

Dual diagnosis

Dual diagnosis is a term used to indicate the presence of a substance use disorder and at least one other mental health diagnosis. As discussed, it is very common for people facing Heroin addiction to live with at least one additional mental health disorder, such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD, personality disorders, or depression. Dual diagnosis treatment works to address multiple mental health concerns collectively and can be applied in any treatment setting.

Detox

Rather than detox at home, programs allow you to get off of substances like Heroin in a supportive environment with qualified staff. Since withdrawals can be uncomfortable or dangerous, sometimes to the extent that they keep people in the cycle of heroin addiction, this can be highly valuable. It is common to attend detoxification before entering a heroin drug rehab center, but not everybody does.

Medically assisted treatment

Medically assisted treatment or MAT, is frequently used among people overcoming an addiction to Heroin or other Opioid drugs. Those at a heroin addiction treatment center (or who have graduated from a treatment program) may use MAT in addition to other treatments and forms of support.
